About Söderfors Manor

Welcome to Söderfors Herrgård—a historic manor house dating back to around 1690, beautifully situated on the Dalälven River and now developed into a resort. Here, cultural heritage meets modern comfort, with a hotel, spa, restaurant, bar, and conference center that together create a unique experience.

History of Söderfors Manor

The main building at Söderfors Manor was built around 1690 and has evolved from a historic ironworks manor into a modern hotel that still preserves the site’s character and history.

Today, we offer our guests a unique stay in a historic setting with modern amenities. The main building still features preserved ceiling paintings dating from around 1700. Söderfors Ironworks was founded in 1676 by Claes Depken—later ennobled as Anckarström—to manufacture anchors for the Swedish navy. During the Grill family’s tenure, the ironworks expanded significantly, and while many Swedish ironworks have since disappeared, Söderfors continues to thrive as an active industrial town where ironworking still clearly shapes the community and its surroundings to this day.

From Forge to Hospitality

The Söderfors ironworks was established in 1676 to manufacture anchors for the Swedish navy. Over time, both the ironworks and the manor house complex evolved, and today hotel guests can still experience the historic setting and the site’s distinct industrial character in Söderfors.

Architectural Heritage and Modern Comfort

The main building, in the Carolingian style, was erected around 1690 and remodeled during the 18th century; Carl Hårleman was likely involved in the manor’s later design and the construction of its square wings.

The Widows' House – A Symbol of Care and Support

The Widows’ Home was built in 1776 when Anna Johanna Grill the Elder owned Söderfors. The home was established to improve housing conditions for the mill’s widows, and single women with children were also given the opportunity to live there. The building thus became an important part of the mill community’s social responsibility and welfare efforts.

Foundation of the manor

The manor house was built around 1690 and became a central part of the Söderfors ironworks, which had been founded in 1676 to manufacture anchors for the Swedish navy.

Development Under Claes Grill

Claes Grill, a businessman, shipowner, and director of the Swedish East India Company, purchased the Söderfors ironworks in 1748 and became its sole owner in 1750. Under the Grill family, an extensive expansion of the ironworks began, with both architectural and industrial changes that shaped the well-preserved ironworks setting we still see today in Söderfors.

The old cruciform church in Söderfors is destroyed by fire

The old wooden church in Söderfors was destroyed by fire in 1789. Planning for a new, larger stone church had already begun, and construction started that same year based on designs by court architect Erik Palmstedt. The new church was built in the Neoclassical style and consecrated in 1792. The church still contains artifacts linked to the older cruciform church, making the building an important part of Söderfors’s historic and cultural industrial landscape and a vivid reminder of the area’s long history spanning several generations.

The historic inn opens

Gamla Värdshuset was built in 1802 near the manor house and became an important gathering place in the ironworks community. It featured, among other things, a large hall, a store, a tavern, and guest rooms. The building served as an inn until 1872 and was subsequently put to other uses in Söderfors.
